The origin and use of beeswax
Bees produce small wax flakes with their wax glands as building material for their combs. One hive produces at least half a kilo of wax per year, and a large part of it remains for the bees' own use.
When the combs that have reached the end of their lifespan are melted down, new wax bases are rolled out of the wax. The bases serve as a kind of framework for partitions in the beehive, and the bees build new comb structures on them.
Often, bees produce more wax than they need, and it also ends up being used by the beekeeper. Beeswax can be used, for example:
- for wood surface treatment
- as a protective agent for fabric and leather
- candles and crafts
- cosmetics, creams, and soaps
You can use the beeswax buttons from Metsätupa for everything mentioned above, except for the production of cosmetics. For that purpose, we recommend obtaining pollen-purified, cosmetic-grade, and laboratory-tested wax.
Beeswax is a genuine natural product, and therefore its color can vary from dark to light, from yellowish to orange, or even brownish-yellow. The color of the wax is determined by factors such as the existing comb structure and the plants blooming in nature at that time. For example, bright yellow wax is produced during the flowering of dandelions.
A handy-sized button
We sell wax in small buttons, so you don't have to grate or cut a suitable amount from a large block of wax. Small pieces also melt quickly. Always melt the wax safely in a water bath.
Use containers for wax melting where wax residues can be visible and make sure that melted wax does not go down the drain. If wax splashes in the wrong place, let it cool and carefully scrape the wax off.
